Environment – Garbage

Please keep in mind that Germany has a strict recycling system.

A normal German household tends to have up to five different bins for garbage:
  • Glass
  • Paper and card box
  • Other packaging to be recycled (with a special sign: two arrows in a circle, one filled and often green)
  • Organic waste
  • The rest

Please try to use the appropriate bins for paper (blue), plastic packaging and metals (yellow), glass (various colours), biological waste (brown) and general waste (black).

Environment – Deposit

A deposit is charged for most bottles (made from both glass and plastic) as well as for mugs/cups for food, which is refunded when the items are returned to the shops.

Beer bottles are subject to the rules above; but exceptions are bottles with wine, sparkling wine and spirits – they should go into used glass containers. 

Legal – Alcohol

Drinking alcohol in public is generally allowed, but in some cities there are restrictions in certain areas.

Be aware of the local regulations – and find a comfortable place to sit.

Legal – Smoking

Smoking is prohibited in all enclosed public spaces, including restaurants, bars, public transportation, and hotels.

Designated smoking areas are provided outside and are clearly indicated. Throwing cigarette butts on the ground is prohibited (and may result in a fine in some cities).

Customs

Please ensure you are aware of the Traveller’s Allowances before travelling.

Special custom rules apply when entering from territories with special arrangements.

Do not bring any illegal substances or objects with you! Airlines and customs are strict!
