Learn about the intricacies of wastewater treatment from the experts! The Düsseldorf Municipal Wastewater Authority operates two wastewater treatment plants. We will visit the plant Düsseldorf-Süd which is located in the south of Düsseldorf, on the right bank of the Rhine. It was first commissioned in 1975. The last expansion of the treatment plant was largely completed in 2000, with the planned automation being implemented in 2002.

The plant manager will give us a comprehensive tour through the different stages of wastewater treatment, including – amongst others – the inlet, screening system, grit trap and washing, aeration, chemical treatment, filtration, and handling of the left-over products which can be recycled as a substitute fuel. Ask all the questions you've always wanted to ask! Special features like the central control room, blower station, or the flood pumping station will also be part of the tour. The treatment plant operates its own combined heat and power plant, producing electricity equivalent to the needs of approximately 1,000 average 4-person households.

The annual volume of wastewater treated is approximately 40 million cubic meters. From arrival at the sewage treatment plant (inlet) to discharge into the Rhine, the wastewater treatment process takes an average of 48 hours on a dry day.

Notes

Participants should wear sturdy shoes and be able to walk well, as a certain distance will be covered on the grounds during the three hours.

For safety and hygiene reasons, it is not permitted to eat or drink during the tour.
