Germany – the land of poets, thinkers, and… strict rules for cleaning staircases? From Oktoberfest and endless varieties of bread to the surprising love for mixing beer with banana juice, Coca Cola or woodruff syrup, Germany is full of peculiarities that might seem strange at first – but are undeniably fascinating.

This talk dives into the world of German traditions and habits: Why is there a rotating schedule for cleaning staircases ("Kehrwoche")? What's the deal with garden gnomes and an obsession with clubs and associations? And why is punctuality more than just a virtue here? With a wink and plenty of anecdotes, we’ll uncover the small and big quirks that make Germany so unique and, let’s face it, oddly charming.

Short vita

Andrea Wojtkowiak is a journalist and author working with various radio and TV stations as well as podcast productions. She lives in Munich, loves to travel, is passionate about learning languages, and has a keen interest in the quirky sides of different cultures. One day, she realized that Germany, too, is full of peculiar and endearing oddities. With a curious eye, she decided it was time to take a closer look at her own country.

With a wink and a sense of humour, she explores the unique habits of everyday German life: from Kehrwoche (rotating schedules for cleaning staircases) and Vereinsmeierei (an obsession with clubs and their bureaucracy) to drinks no one else would dream of mixing. She enjoys in collecting anecdotes about the little quirks and big traditions that make Germany so wonderfully peculiar.

Notes

Please accept that we charge for this event in order to pay for the rent of the room. It would be unfair to include the rent into the base fee of the IBD+ 2025 making everyone pay for it instead of just those attending the presentations and workshops. Furthermore, experience from former annual gatherings in Germany have shown that if a presentation or workshop has a price tag rather those interested sign up for it thus offering them a better chance to get a slot. Thank you.

We have three rooms for the presentations and workshops in DUS Conference Plus that can accommodate a different number of guests. We will swap rooms if the interest in the event suggests we do so.
