Staying in touch with fellow Mensans, especially during international events, can be surprisingly challenging. With a mix of platforms like WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, SMS, and RCS, communication becomes fragmented. Even when you do have someone's contact, creating group chats for (inter)national projects isn’t always straightforward. You often need to already know every participant or rely on someone to invite you. And even then, it’s easy to invite the wrong person by mistake due to name similarities in your address book.

To address this, Mensa in Deutschland (MinD) launched a national solution on 01. March 2024, based on the Matrix chat protocol. It already connects over 1,400 participants, open to all national members and international guests with a MinD account.

In this session, I’d like to introduce this platform and explore the exciting possibility of building a worldwide, federated communication system for Mensa. Imagine using your Mensa-ID to securely connect with members across the globe, join international discussions, and easily discover open group chats hosted by other national groups.

Short vita

Bao completed his training as an IT specialist in system integration in 2012 and completed his computer science degree in September 2023. Since early childhood, he has frequently come into contact with IT - building computers, setting up networks, and more. However, it was only through his training and later studies that this interest was significantly deepened.

Since 2010, he has been running his own cloud infrastructure with a wide variety of services. Among these are, of course, Matrix and Jitsi, which form the foundation of the mChat platform.

For him, IT is a hobby that just happened to become a profession. In addition to IT, he has countless other interests and hobbies such as skiing, golf, diving, tinkering, 3D printing, and culinary arts amongst others.

Notes

Please accept that we charge for this event in order to pay for the rent of the room. It would be unfair to include the rent into the base fee of the IBD+ 2025 making everyone pay for it instead of just those attending the presentations and workshops. Furthermore, experience from former annual gatherings in Germany have shown that if a presentation or workshop has a price tag rather those interested sign up for it thus offering them a better chance to get a slot. Thank you.

We have three rooms for the presentations and workshops in DUS Conference Plus that can accommodate a different number of guests. We will swap rooms if the interest in the event suggests we do so.
