Wuppertaler Schwebebahn


The city of Wuppertal is famous for its "Schwebebahn" (translates as floating train).

You can imagine it like a tram but with the rails above and flying about 10 meters over the ground. It is normal part of the public transport, and you can use it to travel through Wuppertal and have an excellent view on the Wupper (river that flows through Wuppertal) most of the time.

The Schwebodrom is the matching museum which gives insight in the origin, the construction and some interesting stories of the Schwebebahn.

We organized a guided tour which also includes a virtual-reality-experience. We recommend you ride on the Schwebebahn on the last lag of your trip to this museum 😉

Directions (from IBD Hotel)

Travel time is about 105 minutes
... including some potential waiting time for the trains you will take and the time locally in Wuppertal.
  • Take the foot bridge in front of Maritim Hotel towards the airport terminal C
  • Head for the local transport train station in the basement of terminal C "Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal (S)"
  • Take the local train S1 or S11 to Düsseldorf central station "Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof" (5 stops)
  • Take the local train RE4 towards "Dortmund Hbf"
    Or the local train RE13 towards "Hamm/Wesfalen Hbf"
    Or the local train S8 towards "Wuppertal Oberbarmen"
  • Get off at "Wuppertal Oberbarmen"
  • Continue as detailed below

Directions (from Wuppertal Oberbarmen)

Travel time is some 15 minutes
  • Take the "Schwebebahn" towards "Vohwinkel" and ride up to "Wuppertal Werther Brücke"
  • Cross the main road at the traffic light
  • Turn left into "Werth"
  • Schwebodrom is on the left side.

Hint: You want to visit several events in Solingen and/or Wuppertal so that you have to spend over an hour to get to that region.
Please note that the train runs some 5 minutes between "Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof" - "Wuppertal Barmen" - "Wuppertal Oberbarmen"
