Guided tour through the building comprising mosque complex and prayer room allowing not only to see the construction and interior works but getting information about one of the world’s biggest religions from first hand.

With 1,200 seats and a 2,000 square meter prayer room, the central mosque in Cologne-Ehrenfeld is one of the largest Islamic places of worship in Europe.

Like an oversized, unfolding bud, the prayer room rises from the cityscape of Cologne, on the edge of a multi-lane road with huge concrete shells, arranged in concentric rings, with glass in between. The striking building is 30 meters high, with two 55-meter-high filigree minarets on the sides. Planning and construction took 10 years - and cost around 30 million euros, including many discussions.

Notes

On Friday 24th of October 2025 the muezzin will be calling at exactly 13:20 o'clock starting the prayer for the moslem community. Though we are not allowed to attend the prayer you might listen to the muezzin while having dinner in one of the nearby cafés on Venloer Street.

Important notes

Shoes need to be taken off in parts of the mosque. All participants are asked to wear suitable clothing:

  • Knees, shoulders and cleavage have to be covered
  • Female visitors are asked to wear a headdress such as a scarf
  • When entering the prayer room, it is mandatory to wear socks (for hygienic reasons)
  • Backpacks, or even larger bags or suitcases are not permitted in the prayer room

... including some potential waiting time for the trains you will take and the time locally in Cologne.
  • Take the foot bridge in front of Maritim Hotel towards the airport terminal C
  • Take the Sky Train in the Airport from "Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal C" to "Düsseldorf Flughafen Bahnhof" (the railway station)
  • Walk to the railway train station "Düsseldorf Flughafen"
  • Take the regional train RE1 or RE5 to Cologne central station "Köln Hauptbahnhof"
    Note that the aforementioned regional trains pass through the Düsseldorf central station "Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof"

Directions (from Köln Hauptbahnhof)

Travel time is some 30 minutes
  • Inside Cologne central station, get down to the Underground (close to the exit at the Cathedral, left-hand side)
  • Take the U5 in direction "Sparkasse am Butzweilerhof" and get off at "Köln West" (3 stops)
  • Shortly before the stop the tram turned left off "Venloer Straße" - walk back to that street and turn left into it
  • After some 350m through a park the mosque is on the right-hand side

Hint: You want to visit several events in Cologne so that you have to spend a bit over an hour to get to Cologne only once.
