The Filmmuseum Düsseldorf, located in the Old Town of North Rhine Westphalia's state capital, was founded in 1993. This interactive museum gives an exciting access to the world of filmmaking, spanning from its earliest beginnings to the present day.
Its permanent exhibition (approx. 2,200m²) conveys a lively history of film and presents a selection of rare vintage film technology. Camera Obscuras and Laterna Magicas from the 1880s, film projectors and cameras from the early 20th century to the present day, set models, state designs, props and costumes can be marvelled at. The Shadow Puppetry Collection is truly exceptional, containing about 500 figurines from the 13th to the 19th century and other documents on the history of this art. A replica film studio and a special effects section give insight into actual movie making.
The visitor will also witness production processes and the impact of film on western culture and everybody's life. Aside from its permanent collection, the Filmmuseum develops and presents temporary exhibitions dealing with film and the media.

- Leave the Maritim Hotel through the main entrance on the ground floor next to the reception
- Turn left and walk past the staircase tower of "Parking 8" towards the airport building and enter it
- You are now on the arrivals level - follow the signs for "S-Bahn S11/Local trains"
- Just in front of McDonald’s, take the moving walkway down to the station
- Take the local train S6 or S11 in direction of Düsseldorf central station "Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof (Hbf)" up to "Düsseldorf Wehrhahn" (4 stops)
- On street level take the local subway U71 in direction "D-Rath S"
Or the local subway U73 in direction "D-Uni Ost/Botanischer Garten"
Or the local subway U79 in direction "D-Wittlaer"
Or the local subway U79 in direction "D-Hellriegelstraße" - Get off at "D-Benrather Straße U" (4 stops)
- Underground, follow the signs to "Ausgang Benrather Straße Carlsplatz Kasernenstraße", take the escalators up and exit the station
- Go straight ahead into "Benrather Straße" and follow that street for some 220 meters
- Turn right into "Maxplatz" and follow "Schulstraße" to the left.
- After some 100 meters the destination is on the right-hand side

- Take the local train S1 or S11 in the direction "Düsseldorf Flughafen" up to the station "Wehrhahn"
