Jeroen Komen

What if you never had to work again – and not because you’re a millionaire, but because you made smarter, simpler choices?

In this playful and thought-provoking session, Jeroen Komen shares how he gradually stepped away from working life when his business proved to run just fine without him. He expected to start a new company, but when that didn’t happen right away, he bought a small airplane out of boredom – because, well, why not? He ended up writing a book about his flying adventures, gave talks about it, and never really went back to work.

Through personal stories and hands-on reflection, Jeroen invites you to explore what early retirement might look like for you. Not the fantasy version with yachts and pools, but the real-life version: more time, more depth, and a lifestyle that fits a more modest budget.

Topics include:
  • Why spending less is often easier than earning more
  • How to uncover hidden wealth (in your house, pension, or habits)
  • Living without external motivation – finding your why
  • The fear of watching your savings shrink – and why that’s okay
  • The difference between being a victim of rising costs vs being in control
  • Busting the myth that early retirement is only for the rich

As members of Mensa, you already have a powerful asset: the ability to think ahead, see patterns, and question assumptions. This session helps you apply those strengths to design a life of greater freedom and meaning – possibly much earlier than you thought possible.

Short vita

Jeroen Komen (1968) is an entrepreneur by nature. When his company turned out to thrive without his daily involvement, he “fired himself.” Instead of starting something new, he explored what life could be like with more time and less money - and discovered it suited him just fine.

He wrote a book about his airplane adventures, gave talks, and now focuses on a life of quality over quantity – for example in raising his 7-year-old daughter. Today, he helps others explore whether (and how) they too might stop working long before retirement age.

Notes

Please accept that we charge for this event in order to pay for the rent of the room. It would be unfair to include the rent into the base fee of the IBD+ 2025 making everyone pay for it instead of just those attending the presentations and workshops. Furthermore, experience from former annual gatherings in Germany have shown that if a presentation or workshop has a price tag rather those interested sign up for it thus offering them a better chance to get a slot. Thank you.
