Düsseldorf, the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, lies directly on the Rhine and is closely linked to the river. It is along the river that the city developed, with the old town directly on the riverbank.
Historically the Rhine was an important transport route connecting many parts of Europe; the river played a major role in the development of this part of the world. And also, nowadays the Rhine remains a significant economic factor.
The Rhine is an important part of Düsseldorf’s identity. The city would not be what it is today without its location on the Rhine.
The IBD
+ is a good opportunity for an international group to get to know the Rhine better.

Dutch Mensa member Sietse Altena (71) originally comes from a family of skippers.
In 2023, he was given the opportunity to follow in his grandfather's footsteps and sail as a crew member on an inland vessel. The journey took him from the Netherlands upstream on the Rhine, including along and through Düsseldorf. He took many photos and made many notes along the way.
Sietse has a university degree in physical geography and has also kept his eyes open from that perspective.

Please accept that we charge for this event in order to pay for the rent of the room. It would be unfair to include the rent into the base fee of the IBD
+ 2025 making everyone pay for it instead of just those attending the presentations and workshops. Furthermore, experience from former annual gatherings in Germany have shown that if a presentation or workshop has a price tag rather those interested sign up for it thus offering them a better chance to get a slot.
