Discovering Poisonous Plants at the Botanical Garden Düsseldorf

Join us for a fascinating guided tour through the Botanical Garden Düsseldorf to explore the hidden dangers and surprising beauty of "poisonous plants" found right here in our environment.

Our journey begins in front of the main dome at the main entrance. From there, we'll delve into various areas of the garden, observing firsthand a diverse array of plants that, despite their often alluring appearance, possess toxic properties.

You'll see - depending of the season - concrete examples of common garden plants and native species that can be harmful if ingested or touched, and fascinating botanical facts.

This tour offers a unique opportunity to experience and learn about the intriguing world of poisonous plants in a living, breathing environment.

The tour takes place in all weather conditions. In case of rain, we will primarily move our observations and discussions indoors to the glasshouses. Make sure to bring weather appropriate clothing.

Important notes

Make sure to wear appropriate clothing to visit garden/greenhouse. It might get cold/wet/windy or nice and sunny. In case of rain the tour will be hold inside the greenhouse/ dome.

Directions (from IBD Hotel)

Travel time is about 90 minutes ... including some waiting time for the trains you will take since being late is no option.
  • Take the foot bridge in front of Maritim Hotel towards the airport terminal C
  • Head for the local transport train station in the basement of terminal C "Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal (S)"
  • Take the local train S1 or S11 towards the Düsseldorf central station "Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof" and get off at "Wehrhahn" (4 stops)
  • Take the tram U73 in direction and up to "D-Uni Ost/Botanischer Garten"
  • Aftger leaving the tram continue in the tram's direction but keeping a bit to the right of the rails
  • Turn onto the path to the left in front of the buildings you walk towards
  • Say on the left-hand path near the house's corner and walk through the greenery
  • When the path makes a slight right curve you can already see the glass dome - that is where you want to head

Directions (from Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof)

Travel time is approx. 60 minutes
  • Take the local train S1 or S11 in the direction "Düsseldorf Flughafen" up to the station "Wehrhahn"
  • Then proceed as indicated above
  • ... or find some more direct route
