The Drachenfels: A Volcanic Hill with a Rich History

The Drachenfels, a prominent hill in the Siebengebirge mountains, owes its existence to volcanic activity. Millions of years ago, rising magma cooled and solidified beneath the surface, creating this distinctive rock formation. Perched atop the hill are the ruins of Drachenfels Castle, constructed between 1138 and 1167 by Archbishop Arnold I of Cologne. This strategic location served to protect the Cologne region from southern attacks. During the Thirty Years' War in 1634, the castle was destroyed by Swedish Protestant forces and has never been rebuilt. Numerous legends and myths surround the Drachenfels, including the tale of Siegfried slaying the dragon Fafnir. To this day, the Drachenfels remains a popular destination, offering visitors breathtaking views of the Rhine Valley.

The Drachenfels Railway is a historic rack railway in Königswinter that has been transporting visitors to the Drachenfels since 1883. As the oldest operating rack railway in Germany, it offers a scenic journey through the Siebengebirge Nature Park and connects the valley station with the ruins of Drachenfels Castle.

Embark on a scenic journey from Düsseldorf and travel by bus along the romantic Rhine River. Once we reach the foot of Drachenfels, we'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Siebengebirge mountains. Ascend the historic Drachenfels Railway to the castle ruins, where you'll be rewarded with a panoramic vista. After exploring the castle, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely stroll or a short hike through the surrounding area. Conclude your day with a relaxing return trip to Düsseldorf, filled with wonderful memories.
