Special exhibition “Maori“

This exhibition showcases impressive figures with realistic facial tattoos, some of whose eyes are accentuated by iridescent inlays, as well as jewelry boxes (Waka huia), greenstone treasures, precious capes, and more, reserved for high-ranking individuals. When investigating their origins, one quickly reaches a dead end: Almost all the Māori carvings in the Museum Fünf Kontinente (Five Continents) were acquired in London between 1825 and 1914, where their trail disappears. But how did they get there from New Zealand? Were they stolen or extorted from their owners? Did they enter European hands through purchase or exchange, and how did these transactions take place? As the exhibition demonstrates, these connections can often only be approached through specific clues. The search for clues begins with archival materials such as historical photographs and documents. These provide information about the immediate previous owners of the objects from whom the museum acquired them and shed light on the motivations of these collectors.

In addition to the guided tour, entrance tickets must be purchased for €5 per person.

Wegbeschreibung (ab Tagungshotel)

  1. Leave the hotel, keep right and follow Hochstraße.
  2. After approx. 50 m (in front of the Sudeten German Museum), turn left towards Riggauerweg.
  3. Walk down Riggauerweg.
  4. Cross the intersection of Lilienstraße and Zeppelinstraße towards Ludwigsbrücke.
  5. Cross the Isar via Ludwigsbrücke.
  6. At the end of the bridge, change sides of the street at the Steinsdorferstraße/Zweibrückenstraße intersection (you will then continue toward the city center on the right side of the street). 7. Continue along Zweibrückenstraße.
  7. Turn right at Thierschstraße. Here you have a choice. Either take the tram for one stop or continue along Thierschstraße on foot. If you take the tram, you will save yourself a 400 m walk.
  8. Tram: At the “Isartor” tram stop, take tram 16 towards Effnerplatz and travel one stop to Mariannenplatz. Alternatively, follow Thierschstraße to Mariannenplatz.
  9. In both cases, turn left at Mariannenplatz into Adelgundenstraße and follow this street. Keep right, leaving Mannhardtstraße on your left.
  10. Continue along Adelgundenstraße until you reach Maximilianstraße, then turn left.
  11. Your destination is on the left-hand side.
