The THW (Technisches Hilfswerk) is Germany's Federal Agency for Technical Relief, dedicated to emergency response, civil protection, and humanitarian aid. Around 88,000 people are engaged as volunteers in 668 local THW organisations throughout Germany. The so-called "blue fire brigades" are competent partners to fire brigades, the police and aid organisations in averting dangers and mitigating the consequences of accidents and disasters.

-

Join us for an immersive, two-hour session at our base near Düsseldorf Airport, where you'll be introduced to the THW and its specialized units. Participants will gain valuable insights into the organization’s operations and its critical role in disaster relief. In addition, there will be a hands-on opportunity to explore THW vehicles and operate heavy rescue equipment. 100% of proceeds go towards the procurement of much needed equipment for our work. We welcome attendees of all ages and abilities, promising an engaging and action-packed afternoon!

-

Please note that despite being a federal agency the THW is almost completely run by volunteers; Mensa thus made a donation. If you've enjoyed the afternoon and would like to support these engaged women and men further, feel free to make your personal donation on site - purely optional of course.

Notes

Normal clothing and footwear are sufficient, please avoid light footwear (e.g. sandals).

The premises are barrier-free and impaired participants are most welcome but might not be able to join all activities offered.

Directions (from IBD Hotel)

Travel time is about 50 minutes including a walk of about 1km
(The travel time is due to the long walk and the experience that a group of Mensans walks half the speed of what Google suggests)
  • If you're on the ground floor where the hotel’s reception is take the stairs or elevator up to first floor, the conference level
  • On the first floor of Maritim Hotel - with IBD meeting room, organisation office, board game room, etc. - head for the large hall
  • At the end of that hall between the two bars (Galeriebar and Morley’s Bar) is the exit to the elevated footpath towards Düsseldorf Airport – go for it
  • After taking the footbridge follow the signs for "Departures" and once entering the airport building turn right
  • Follow the signs to SkyTrain and "Flughafen Bahnhof/Airport station"
  • Take elevators or escalators up to the SkyTrain station
The SkyTrain is free of charge, runs every 5 minutes and takes 7 minutes to the final stop "Flughafen Bahnhof/Airport station"
  • Get off and head for the railway station "Düsseldorf Flughafen"
  • Pass through the railway station and leave it on the other side
  • Walk over the parking lot "Ahrensplatz"
  • At the roundabout keep right into "EUREF Campus" street to cross underneath the highway following this road for some 450 meters in total
  • The street name changes into "Tiefenbroicher Weg" - just continue straight ahead
  • Behind the bus station turn left into "Mündelheimer Weg" and enjoy it for another 450 meters - please note that this street makes a right turn about halfway along your walk
  • The destination is on the left hand side

Directions (from Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof)

Travel time is approx. 50 minutes
  • Take the local train S1 or one of the REx trains to Düsseldorf airport train station "Düsseldorf Flughafen Bahnhof"

  • Then proceed as indicated above
  • ... or find some more direct route
